How many "I shoulds" are running your life?

A few months ago, I asked myself a question that completely changed the way I see my life:

How many times per day do I tell myself "I should"?

I should work harder.

I should earn more.

I should go out more.

I should be more productive.

I should have my life figured out by now.

I should know what I want.

I should...

I should...

I should...

When I started paying attention, I realised my life was full of them.

And the strange thing was that I wasn't ignoring these "I shoulds".

I was actually doing them.

I was working hard.

I was building a career.

I was being productive.

But somehow...

it never felt like enough.

One day, after ignoring warning sign after warning sign, my body decided it had had enough of my "I shoulds" and that's how I got a burnout diagnosis.

Suddenly, the questions become impossible to ignore:

Whose life am I building?

Who decided what success should look like?

And what if I don't actually want the things I've been working so hard for?

I don't have all the answers.

Actually, I think this podcast exists because I'm still exploring those questions myself.

But somewhere along the way, I discovered another sentence that slowly started replacing "I should":

I allow myself.

I allow myself to want different things.

I allow myself to question the checklist.

I allow myself to build a life that makes sense to me, even if it doesn't make sense to everyone else.

And maybe that's the real question:

Not:

How should I live my life?

But:

How would I love to live my life?

In the first episode of Life Beyond the Checklist, I share the story behind this question, my experience with burnout, the countless "I shoulds" that were running my life, and how I started moving from "I should" to "I allow myself."

Before you go, I have a question for you:

What's one "I should" that has been following you around recently?

You don't need to change it today.

Just notice it.
